You Missed Leroy Jethro Gibbs' Crucial Role In NCIS: Tony & Ziva's Story

Mark Harmon doesn't have any confirmed appearances in NCIS: Tony & Ziva, but Leroy Jethro Gibbs plays an important role in the characters' new mission. After Tony DiNozzo Jr.'s surprise NCIS season 21 return, Michael Weatherly is officially back in the franchise, and this time, with Cote de Pablo's equally-loved Ziva David.

It's a special reunion, especially for those who have been fans of flagship during its earliest years, when they were part of MCRT's elite team. This time, however, NCIS: Tony & Ziva's story leads them to a new adventure separate from what's happening in Navy Yard. Despite that, their history in the franchise will still play a role in the new show.

Ideally, Tony and Ziva's NCIS franchise's comeback should have come with reuniting with their former co-workers and eventual life-long friends, such as Timothy McGee, Jimmy Palmer, and even Abby Sciuto. That being said, arguably the most-clamored reunion for the pair is with Gibbs. That may not be in the cards, but Harmon's character still has an impact in NCIS: Tony & Ziva.

Tony & Ziva Are Still Using Their NCIS Badges In Their Spinoff

Much has changed in the mothership in recent years. After Gibbs' retirement in NCIS season 19, he was replaced by Alden Parker, who has done a good job steering the team to a new era. That said, Tony and Ziva only ever knew Gibbs as the leader of the MCRT, as he was their only lead during their time in it.

Both have already long left the government agency, but in NCIS: Tony & Ziva, the pair is still using their badges from their time with Gibbs' team. The fact that they have been able to keep those identification cards has made it easier for them to do their fact-finding mission in the hopes of exonerating both of them.

It's unclear how frequently Tony and Ziva have used their old NCIS badges in the years leading up to their show. However, the fact that they are still carrying them around hints that they have been useful in the past. Somehow, it feels like it's Gibbs' way of helping even though he can't be with them.

What Are The Chances Of Mark Harmon Appearing In NCIS: Tony & Ziva?

In terms of narrative, Tony and Ziva are some of the very few people that Gibbs would give up his retirement in Alaska for. His relationship with the pair went beyond just co-workers, especially since they had to rely on each other for countless dangerous incidents. Still, it's highly unlikely that Harmon will appear in NCIS: Tony & Ziva.

Firstly, the show has made it clear why Tony and Ziva are trying to solve the issue on their own. Even if they wanted to call Gibbs, time is just not on their side to call their old allies in NCIS: Tony & Ziva. Secondly, Harmon has maintained his distance from the NCIS franchise aside from NCIS: Origins, which he executive produces.
