One year after The Acolyte's cancellation, Star Wars has confirmed the truth behind one of its biggest theories. As seen in the series set during the early High Republic Era, the show's primary antagonist was Manny Jacinto's Qimir, revealed to be the mysterious dark side wielder known as The Stranger.
Following his brutal duel with multiple Jedi Knights, a predominant theory about The Stranger and his origins was formed, tying him to the sequel trilogy (despite The Acolyte being set 100 years before the prequels). Now, Star Wars has further supported these theories, and the truth about The Stranger himself.
The Biggest Acolyte Theory About Qimir aka The Stranger, Explained
By The Acolyte’s finale, one big question was intentionally left unanswered: who is Qimir aka The Stranger?
While it would be easy to identify him as a Sith Lord with his menacing helmet and crimson-bladed lightsabers, The Stranger claimed only the Jedi would likely call him a Sith, the implication being that he did not belong to either order in the present (despite hints suggesting he'd once belonged to both groups in his past).
Thanks to his cortosis-forged helmet, many fans began to wonder if Qimir's familiar resemblance to the sequels' Kylo Ren and his Knights was no accident. Likewise, The Acolyte episode 5's ending featured a scene with Qimir where the soundtrack carried unmistakable parallels to John Williams' Kylo Ren theme, leading many to wonder if it was indeed an intentional audio cue.
Taking all this into account, it's no wonder that the prevailing Acolyte theory about The Stranger's identity suggests that he was the First Ren, the founder who inspired and first led the separate order of Force wielders apart from the Jedi and Sith.
Seeking his own passions and the freedom to wield the Force as he wished beyond the doctrines of the Jedi and Sith, the theory is quite strong given the evidence provided at the time. However, Lucasfilm has since doubled down in the months that have followed The Acolyte's finale (and unfortunate cancellation).
How Star Wars: Galaxy Of Heroes Supports Qimir As The First Ren
Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes recently added Qimir as a playable character to the popular mobile game, which features an impressively wide roster of characters.
Featuring abilities like "I Want A Pupil," which sees Qimir turning other Force users on his team into acolytes with new synergies, The Stranger is a very exciting addition to the game. However, his official bio features some rather telling information:
"Hailing from the High Republic Era, the enigmatic warrior exploded onto the scene in the forest of Khofar in the Disney+ show, The Acolyte. The Stranger's power is undeniable, cutting down an entire team of Jedi with relative ease. Acting as a mentor to both light and dark side Force users, he seeks to gather a group of powerful students while pursuing his own agenda."
In The Acolyte series, we saw Qimir attempting to turn both Mae and Osha Aniseya into his new students. This accounts for the bio's line about The Stranger acting as a mentor to users of both the light and dark. However, the new bit is the final line of text about Qimir seeking to gather multiple students to his side.
The implication here is that Qimir is not looking to overthrow a Sith master (presumably Darth Plagueis with a single acolyte). Instead, Qimir is "pursuing his own agenda" and looking to take on multiple students.
Keeping that in mind, it certainly does feel like this official Star Wars reveal supports the First Ren theory with Qimir seeking to form his own group of Force users apart from the Jedi or Sith.
New Reports Confirm The Acolyte's Knights of Ren Teases Were Intentional
Qimir / The Stranger eventually became the first Ren and founded the Knights of Ren, reveals Leslye Headland in The Art of The Acolyte book. “It was in the design of the character, as well as knowing that we were going to introduce Darth Plagueis, who has to end up with… pic.twitter.com/khwQ7SOrWA — Star Wars Holocron (@sw_holocron) October 26, 2025
Even more recently, various sources online have reported that Acolyte creator Leslye Headland deliberately infused the Stranger’s design, dialogue, and fighting style to point toward the Knights of Ren, confirming that the aforementioned teases were indeed intentional.
Because The Acolyte has since been canceled, any plans to delve into and outright reveal The Stranger as the First Ren in future seasons are no more. However, it's still exciting to see that the intention was there, even if Lucasfilm decides to change course in the near future.
The idea of Qimir founding the group of dark side warriors apart from the Sith is absolutely fascinating, making his character even more dynamic and captivating than he already was. With any luck, we'll one day see some kind of Star Wars spin-off project that delves into The Stranger's character and history even further.
