The next Netflix show from the creators of Game of Thrones, Death by Lightning, sets a release date, confirming when the historical drama arrives on the platform. Death by Lightning is a Netflix drama following the presidency of James A. Garfield through his assassination by Charles J. Guiteau. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss of Game of Thrones are executive producers.
Now, Netflix has confirmed Death by Lightning will arrive on the streaming platform on Thursday, November 6, 2025. The miniseries will be released in full, much like the streamers' other original projects. What Death By Lightning's Release Date Means For The Series
Death by Lightning sees Michael Shannon in the role of James Garfield, while Matthew Macfadyen stars as Charles Guiteau. Other main cast members include Nick Offerman as Chester A. Arthur, Betty Giplin as Lucretia Garfield, Bradley Whitford as James Blaine, and Shea Whigham as Roscoe Conkling. While Benioff and Weiss are EPs, the show was created by Mike Makowsky.
Death by Lightning is based on the 2011 non-fiction book Destiny of the Republic by Candice Millard.
However, this marks the third TV series for Netflix Benioff and Weiss have been involved with since the end of Game of Thrones. The others include cancelled comedy drama The Chair, for which they served as executive producers, and an American adaptation of the Chinese novel series 3 Body Problem, which they co-created with Alexander Woo.
Alongside the forthcoming 3 Body Problem season 2 and 3, Death by Lightning is their next big release for the platform. Its approaching release date means it won't be long until the adaptation of Garfield's presidency arrives on the small screen. With it will no doubt be engaging drama and memorable sequences pulled from the pages of history.

With the show arriving in just a few months, the miniseries will be on the platform just in time to catch some viewership before larger releases, like Stranger Things season 5, arrive. It's also a completely new genre for Benioff and Weiss when it comes to their Netflix shows, offering a completely different type of story with their input attached.
Given how historically accurate its images have been and how much talent is within the main cast, it seems like Death by Lightning will be another successful venture for the pair. It also promises an engaging story based on real history, given the Garfield presidency was the shortest in American history at just six months before his death.
