Dexter Revival Dreams Shattered After Original Sin Spinoff Gets Axed

Despite earlier indications, Dexter: Original Sin has been cancelled and will not be returning for a second season. Dexter: Original Sin was a prequel to the original series that focused on a young Dexter Morgan's violent years as he honed his code. The show was the second spin-off from the original series, preceded by Dexter: New Blood and followed by Dexter: Resurrection.

After premiering in December 2024, Dexter: Original Sin's ending aired in February 2025. In April 2025, fans of the spin-off got seemingly good news when it was announced that the show had been renewed for a second season. However, it turns out that Dexter: Original Sin's cast won't be reuniting to continue the series.

Variety reports that sources within Paramount told them that Dexter: Original Sin has been cancelled. The outlet also reported that, despite the previous renewal announcement, the show had actually been put on indefinite hiatus with no additional filming plans. Alternatively, the sources stated that Paramount intended to put together the writer's room for Dexter: Resurrection season 2 soon.

What This Means For The Future Of The Dexter Franchise

During Dexter: Original Sin, the show gave viewers a new perspective on the titular character's origin story. When it was announced that the prequel series had been renewed, devoted fans of the franchise expected to learn more about Dexter Morgan's backstory. Dexter: Resurrection has not forgotten the prequel, as it has made multiple callbacks to it.

The revelation that Dexter: Original Sin has been unceremoniously cancelled eliminates the possibility of discovering more of his origin. Instead, Dexter: Resurrection returning ensures the franchise will focus on revealing how the titular antihero will continue to take the lives of monstrous villains and get away with it.

Even though Dexter: Original Sin season 2 won't happen, fans of the franchise may still get to see more prequel stories. There is another proposed prequel series that is focused on another character, Arthur "The Trinity Killer" Mitchell. Despite all episodes of the Trinity Killer prequel being already written, the show has not been officially picked up.

Our Take On The Future Of The Dexter Franchise

When I learned about Dexter: Original Sin, the show sounded like it had an exciting premise. As someone who'd been a huge fan of the original series in the earlier seasons, I wanted to see stories that led into those gripping episodes. That said, even though Dexter: Original Sin featured talented actors, the prequel never reached those heights.

Ultimately, a Dexter Morgan show without Hall's magnetic and off-putting performance feels empty. If another Dexter: Original Sin season had aired, it could have potentially reached the heights of some of the iconic seasons. However, Dexter: Resurrection has managed to feel like a return to the best moments of the original series.
