Sarah Michelle Gellar has shared a major update on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel series. Originally airing from 1997-2003, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was one of the most influential supernatural series of all time. Over 20 years later, and after Gellar denied that she would return to the role, a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot pilot has been ordered by Hulu.
Now, on Gellar's Instagram, she revealed a set of images that confirm that the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot had its first table read. The date on the script shows that the table read happened on July 21. Included with Gellar's script is an action figure of her as Buffy.
The title of the series has been blacked out, hiding the new official moniker. As was detailed in previous reports, the pilot episode is written by showrunners Nora and Lilla Zuckerman and will be directed by Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao.
What This Means For The Buffy Reboot
The Series Is Taking Significant Steps To Get Closer To Release
No story details have been provided about the new series. At the time of writing, Gellar is currently the only original Buffy the Vampire Slayer star to be confirmed to return. However, Gellar has stated that she wants all of the dead Buffy the Vampire Slayer characters to return for the reboot. Aside from Gellar, a new Slayer has been cast with Ryan Kiera Armstrong in the lead role.
Our Take On The Buffy Reboot Moving Forward
Gellar Being Actively Involved Is A Great Sign
The majority of updates on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot have come from Gellar. In the two decades since the original series finale, she has always been grateful for the character, has acted as a role model, and has been careful about the series' legacy. With her involved as a producer on the show, she seems fully committed to ensuring her return is coming at the right time.
Bringing back Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a gamble, given how the show has a lasting legacy. However, all the news coming out of the reboot has been positive, and seemingly trying to walk a line between satisfying old fans while telling a new story. Hopefully, it won't be too long a wait before viewers can see the new version of this story.
